All About Domain Names: Part 3

March 5th, 2014

Remember when we stressed the importance of purchasing more than one domain name in our past domain blog articles? Here are the links: Part 1 & Part 2.  In this article, we’ll go over more reasons why you’ll want more than one domain name, and what you can do with them! Parked Domains vs. Addon Domains

all_about_domain_namesParked Domains

A parked domain is a domain name that can be registered on its own without a hosting plan, or under an unlimited hosting plan. When you set up a parked domain, it will forward visitors to your primary domain. For example, if your main site was, you can set up and as parked domains that point to This way, you only need to manage the content on one single site.

Why you’ll need this:

  • Increase traffic to your site. Make sure visitors go where they intend to by purchasing multiple domain extensions and common misspellings of your primary domain name.
  • If you’ve changed your business name, previous clients who know the old domain name can be directed to your new site.

Addon Domains

Hold up! What if you have multiple businesses that need their own websites? This is when an addon domain would come in handy. With an addon domain, you need to register each separate domain, but you only need to pay for one hosting plan. This way, you can have several sites with unique content while sharing just one hosting plan.

Why you’ll need this:

  • Save money! Pay for just one hosting plan, but have individual content for each site.

All About Domain Names: Part 2

February 18th, 2014

You’ve come across domain name extensions many times before, maybe without even knowing it. Also known as a Top Level Domain (TLD), these are the .com, .ca, .us, .biz,… etc. part of a domain name. While many might just pay attention to the unique part of a domain name, it’s important for webmasters to know what domain name extensions are, and how to use this knowledge to their advantage.

According to Internet Assigned Numbers Authority, there are certain categories of extensions.

If you have an opportunity to grab your unique domain name with a .com extension, do it! Most people will assume your website is at a .com extension, so that is one surefire way to maximize traffic potential to your site.

  • .biz might be a good one for businesses. Named after the hip way to refer to “business,” the .biz extension is reserved for those intending to use their website for business or commercial use.
  • .org (from “organization”). It’s an old one and a good one. This one’s most popular with non-profits, schools and communities, but is gaining popularity with for-profit organizations as well.

Other generic top level domains include .net, .info and more.

You might have to fulfill certain requirements in order to acquire one of these bad boys. For example, for .us or .ca, you might need to be a resident or own an office in that particular country.

Other country-code domain extensions include .tv, .eu and more.

There are also sponsored and test domain extensions, which you can read more about at

Why is it important to think about domain extensions?

Several reasons:

  • Find out which extensions are right for your company.
  • Consider which extensions your clients would be drawn to.
  • Think about how many domain extensions you should snatch up to increase the amount of visitors to our site.

With all these different domain extensions, it would probably be wise to purchase more than one. This can help to increase your site traffic OR to create sites with unique content in the most economical way possible. In our next article, we’ll differentiate between parked domains and domain add-ons, so get ready!

All About Domain Names: Part 1

What’s in a name?

Well, when it comes to domain names, the answer is A LOT. These days, while it might seem next to impossible to find an available .COM domain name without having to add five extra numbers to the end, it’s still worth your while to consider these factors in your search.

Your domain name should convey your brand.

  • What does your company or website offer? Make sure your domain name accurately reflects your product.

Make sure your domain name is memorable.

  • A name can be memorable when it’s short, funny or catchy.
  • While you might find it clever to spell “apple” as “app13,” others might not join in the joke when they’re painstakingly trying to remember your website name.
  • Consider how your domain name sounds when it’s spoken aloud.

Purchase more than one domain name.

  • Consider purchasing multiple domain names with similar spellings, and direct them to your main website.

This can be invaluable in many ways: It can prevent web delinquents from impersonating your company. Also, owning misspellings of your domain name can ensure that those who make frequent typos can still get to your site!

Bonus tip:

When all else fails, try adding generic words like “this,” “the,” “life,” “world,”etc. to your name to create a unique yet memorable domain name. Happy hunting! We’ll be talking more about domain names in our upcoming posts… stay tuned!

This includes a 1-on-1 design consultation and professionally designed 5 page website setup to help our clients minimize costs and save time.
